AbstractThe determination of load deflection relations for finite elastic deformations of rubber engineering components constitutes a long standing practical problem with numerous applications in the construction and transport industries. Despite their importance, there exists in the literature surprisingly few theoretical load-deflection relations which are based on the proper theory of finite elastic deformations. The purpose of this paper is to provide an account of existing known results, applicable to the incompressible neo-Hookean and Mooney elastic materials, and based on the assumption that certain pointwise stress requirements can be replaced by resultant or average force requirements. Load-deflection relations are presented for various finite deformations of rectangular and circular pads of rubber and for certain finite deformations of circular cylindrical tubes.
